REQUEST – RAP – JAKARTA

REQUEST was formed in 2008 but it all started in September 2007. It all began when David (Dave) was enjoying an evening with a good friend of his called Tommy at a café somewhere located in Kemang. It turned out that the DJ of the band (DJ Nanda) that was currently performing at the time is a good friend of Tommy. The band had four vocalists and even though they are able to sing any type of songs, they preferred and specialized in singing R&B and Hip Hop songs. Dave felt in love instantly with their performance that night and that’s how he was introduced to DJ Nanda, Daniel, Raymond (Monte), Christy, and the rest of the band. After the introduction, and a friendly conversation, it turned out that Daniel and Dave lived in the same area.

They started to hang out together a lot because of one thing that they both love so much, which is music. Dave was an English teacher, a lyricist and an emcee, so at the time, he had written many songs, but none that had been recorded. Daniel was a singer with tons of experience performing at more than 20 different Cafés throughout Jakarta and some other cities in Indonesia. He also has experience singing in many different events, and even weddings. Knowing that, Dave and Daniel decided to team up, Reconstruct the songs, record them, and see what happens. Daniel introduced Dave to a good friend of his named Yudhi, a vocalist and a beatmaker (music arranger).

The three of them started working their magic in a mini studio at Yudhi’s house. After a couple of months and a couple of songs, Daniel, Monte and the two other vocalists of their band (D’REBORN) were chosen to be one of the vocal groups representing Indonesia to compete at an international competition called GANGSTARZ, held by TV3 in Malaysia. The Vocal group competition had contestants from all over Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, and of course Malaysia. Daniel, Monte and the rest of D’REBORN flew off to Malaysia to compete in Gangstarz for 4 months, but Dave and Yudhi continued their work in the studio.

On July 2008, Dave received a call from Andrew, a very old friend of his from way back in high school, asking if he was still writing lyrics and making Hip Hop music. Of course Dave said yes and asked the purpose of him asking. Without wasting any time, Andrew introduced him to his friend who at the time was the artist manager for a new record label called THE PLATINUM MUSIC and started explaining about their compilation album project called HIP HOP UNITED. Dave was told that they were holding auditions in Jakarta and Bandung for the project, but since Daniel was still competing in Malaysia with D’REBORN, Dave could only send a demo track of one of their best songs called “Baby When I See Your Smile”. About a month after that, sometime in August 2008, THE PLATINUM MUSIC called Dave and told him that they liked the single and chose the song to be part of The HIP HOP UNITED compilation album project.

At the same time, Daniel and the rest of D’REBORN returned to Jakarta with the runner up trophy from the Gangstarz TV3 competition. There was an internal problem at the time with their group. They were facing hard times keeping it together and Yudhi got out of the group. Dave and Daniel decided to keep on working on their music and they also recruited a new member which is Monte. Monte also has tons of experience in singing, performing, and even recording since he was eight years old. Monte is also part of D’REBORN and had been singing with Daniel in different cafés and events for so many years, so it was no problem getting along because they already knew each other very well. The group didn’t have a name at the time but after brainstorming together, they came up with the name REQUEST and decided to make Hip Hop and R&B music together under the management of THE PLATINUM MUSIC. Today REQUEST has many new experiences performing in many different places and events and promoting their songs and THE PLATINUM MUSIC record label under the management of THE PLATINUM MUSIC.
