“After ‘bling bling’s’ addition into the Webster English Dictionary, The Oxford English Dictionary has added ‘thugged out,’ ‘hoochie,’ and other words of Hip-hop lexicon to its online edition.”
Described as “tough looking”, “thugged out” is one of 2,000 new entries into the Oxford’s updated online edition. Meanwhile, “hoochie” is defined as “an overtly sexual woman” and “crack ho” is listed as “a prostitute addicted to crack cocaine.” Other entries included “fanfic,” “po boy,” “beat down” and “Joe Schmo.”
“For most of the last century, African-American vernacular has been the driving force in American slang,” principal editor Jesse Sheidlower told Daily News. “If that word is being used, our responsibility is to put it in.”
While urban youths and emcees have used “thugged out” freely, Noreaga’s excessive use of it on his 1998 debut, N.O.R.E., brought it into the mainstream dialogue. The Queens rapper also has an imprint dubbed Thugged Out Millitainment.
